Intel Volunteers join forces with BTC

On Tuesday, a gaggle of volunteers from Intel descended on WashCo BTC’s new 3rd St office to help with a number of tasks. While some picked up tools to help tear down and repair donated bikes, others attacked stacks of paperwork, reviewing our mailing list and even calling members with thanks and renewal reminders. Our organization would not be where it is today without volunteers. Thank you all for contributing whatever time and skills you are able to!

Commuting Classes Offered

WashCo BTC is partnering with the City of Hillsboro to support the Intermodal Transit Facility (ITF) in downtown Hillsboro. We’ll kick off this partnership with a commuting skills class — just in time for the superb riding weather of summer. If you would like to commute by bike, or are just learning, this class will teach you the basics of commuting by bicycle. Choosing a bike, how to pick a route, clothing tips for any weather, riding at night, etc. This course will take up to 3 hours- 2 classroom hours and one on the bike, so please bring your bike and helmet. Grand Opening a Huge Success

The WashCo BTC had its official Grand Opening Saturday April 7th. Board and staff members were there to greet visitors and pass out goodies. Tonya Nikitin was the official greeter positioned by the front door and ready to tell everyone entering about the Tour de Parks, membership and other programs put on by the BTC. Bike parking in front of the store proved very useful and many people took advantage of it. Gift certificates, bicycle bounty baskets, Nutcase helmets and Le Grand Tour gift certificates were raffled off during the afternoon. Visitors enjoyed a variety of cookies and beverages, and the kids could pick up coloring pages, and other items.

Pedal Nation registers first TdP Riders

Attenders at Pedal Nation, March 24-25, had the opportunity to be the first to register for the 5th Annual Tour de Parks, and a couple lucky cyclists took home the gift basket featured here. Altogether, we talked to dozens of people and raised over $100 for our mission of education and advocacy.

Clean up help at the old center

We’ve been at our TV Hwy site for 3 ½ years and part of our lease agreement is to return it to the white wall and clean floor condition. By the 24th, all that we’re taking with us to our new center in downtown Hillsboro will be gone and nothing left but white paint, ladders, brushes, rollers, rags and mop, bucket & water. The only thing missing are hands, arms, legs and energy to apply the paint to the wall and mops to the floor.

I’m no magicians nephew and I certainly wouldn’t want an outcome similar to his, but for a couple of hours of your time, and some pizza, beer and other beverages to encourage your spirits, we can certainly use your help. The more the merrier!

There will be someone at the center from 9AM on, and we’ll continue working until that pristine condition to the walls are restored.

Safe Kids Partnership Agreement Signed

A partnership agreement between Safe Kids Washington County and the Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition was signed on Monday, February 27th.

The agreement facilitates Safe Kids tax deductible donations for their child safety program.

Safe Kids USA is a nationwide network of organizations working to prevent unintentional childhood injury, the leading cause of death and disability for children ages 1 to 14. In addition, the group is responsible for placing floatation vests at Hagg Lake for the boating public’s use and child safety seat installation and donation programs throughout the county.

The partnership will enable both organizations further their mission to provide a safe environment for children “at home, at play and on the way.”

After 3 ½ years at our TV Highway location in Aloha, the Frans Pauwels Memorial Community Bicycle Center will be relocating to downtown Hillsboro.

The address, 137 NE 3rd Avenue, is the former site of Aunt Addie’s Attic, and offers walk-in and bike-in community and customer service.

Our “Soft” grand opening is scheduled to be March 1, with a full celebration in May, during National Bike Month.

WashCo BTC secures ¡Vámonos! Project award

Thanks to a generous award from Metro the BTC will help the cities of Forest Grove, Cornelius and Hillsboro to create culturally appropriate
maps to help families learn where to walk, bike and ride transit.
“The $2,000 will most certainly help us in our Latino outreach.” said Hal Ballard, Executive Director. “This significant population group is among the most underserved in the county and we hope to address that, at least for the youngest among us, using a bicycle as a tool to bridge that gap.”

UNITED WAY MLK WEEKEND OF SERVICE @ the Community Bicycle Center Friday

On Friday, January 13th, Partnering with the United Way and Hands On Greater Portland, about 10 volunteers will be working with us, taking our salvageable bikes apart for using parts on other bikes that will go on our sales floor or community based programs.

The metals, rubber and other parts will be properly recycled and disposed of.
